Update 0.2.1 - Bug fixes, a reworked boss room, and a somewhat long paragraph on life.

Long time no see, huh?

Pose! :D (this took me a while to make)

It's been a few months since I gathered all my courage and pushed that upload button. A few months since I had to stand in front of 9 people and present this unfinished prototype of a game. A few months since I graduated high school, and realised that despite how well I did on my diploma, my overall marks are nowhere near enough to be accepted into any university. I'm still going to try, mostly because I don't know what I'd do if I don't.

Other than that last part, everything else in my life has been... alright. I want to continue working on this project, but at the same time I've been fighting myself and my own perfectionism. That leads me to feeling like even though I put all of my effort and energy into this one project, I feel like I made no progress at all. Hell, part of why this took so long was because I ended up REMOVING some content as the more i looked at it, the more I realised that this isn't what I want Something Behind the Door to be. One of those removed things is the ending. I made that pretty close to the deadline, and as some people who saw the game noticed, it was abrupt. I have a very specific vision of how this chapter's last scene is, and it... wasn't that. I also felt like I was doing a disservice towards Eli by making his end be that abrupt, and for that I apologise.
...That doesn't mean I won't make him suffer, that was set in stone ever since I first wrote the second version of this script a year ago.

Oh and I still haven't finished implementing the ending yet, but I want to put at least something out here- mostly to prove to myself that all of my work isnt worthless. Honestly, the longer I work on this game and the longer I write this story, the more I see myself in these characters. It should be obvious, as writers tend to put at least a bit of themselves into their creations, but it's still odd to see when you're the one creating.

But enough about my mental health and impostor syndrome, let's take a look at what's new!

Here's the main part:

  • I REMADE THE BOSS ROOM!!!!

THAAAT'S RIGHT FOLKS, THE CAVE FINALLY LOOKS LIKE A CAVE!!!!!!! [applause]
(ignore the bear, I can't draw animals so save my life apparently BUT I WILL DRAW HIM EVENTUALLY I SWEAR)

And here's the other stuff, that I dont wanna share in a big image

  • Added more expressions for both Olive and Eli
  • Gave Rose a (badly drawn) character portrait
  • Added misc scenes that you may or may not encounter (make sure to talk to Mr. Cat before you leave the room!)
  • Olive can look at herself in the mirror! (in the future, there will be more of these mirror scenes :D)
  • Made the shiny thing easier to see
  • New small room in the prologue
  • Remade ???????'s sprite
  • I also rewrote some dialogue

Oh and here's the thing I fixed:

  • Boss phase 2 finally works, and you can't skip it by throwing too much damage at the Enemy!
  • The boss also no longer crashes the game. I swear i finally fixed the problem. ...unless i broke something else in the process.

As for things I have yet to fix...

  • I still don't know how to fix the whole "shadows glitching on lower end pcs" issue, sorry D:
  • Saving right after you enter “The Camp” and then reloading causes the intro event for that area to play again.

And well... That's it! At least, I think that's it for the changelogs. I havent gotten around to replacing all of the placeholder assets, but I SWEAR I WILL. I've been trying to not stress too much over this project, and take my time with it, but at the same time I really want to share what I got so I hope you all can forgive me for this, haha. I've been also working on a smaller game involving another character, mostly as a way for me to see what else i can do with this engine. More details surrounding that project should come out soon (unless im hit with another wave of mental health problems, we'll see!)

Oh and before I forget, I really do appreciate any and all feedback about the game. Kind of makes me feel like someone cares about my work, and it's nice. I hope to someday send out a game that's at the very least worth everyone's time.

Now the next time you see me send an update here, hopefully I finished The Mountain! As much as I love this area, a fresh place would be fun to explore, right?
